The HLA educational materials are a collection of resources provided by individuals both internal and external to Space Telescope Science Institute. These materials are not formalized or standardized, however we do provide a level or grade for the intended audience. If you have created your own labs or excercises using the HLA and would like to share them, please contact Lee Quick. These exercises are designed for the undergraduate level Physics or Astronomy major taking introductory astronomy I or II by Katie Hamren. They require some quantitative work and some knowledge of physics, astronomical concepts, and making simple plots and graphs. To request the answers to these exercises please contact Lee Quick.
DNA and Dating: Buyer Beware
That sensation you feel when you meet someone you like—that visceral pull towards another human being—there's biology behind that. And if there's biology behind that, it can be measured, and controlled for, and used to help determine if two people will be attracted to each other before they ever even meet in person. That's the theory behind a new wave of online dating trying to radically improve the matchmaking process by analyzing your DNA.
At first, I'm not even sure how best to frame the question in order to secure my wife's participation. On the day we each spit into separate test tubes, I don't yet understand how a DNA test can offer evidence of compatibility, because I am only on page eight of Daniel M Davis's book The Compatibility Gene. But here's the gist of the idea: there are a small number of human genes — a tiny section of the short arm of chromosome six — that may play a role in determining how attractive you are to a potential mate. Suitable partners can literally sniff each other out, finding an optimal genetic other half using their noses.
